Is this the day? Is this the day when Rory McIlroy ends his eight-year wait for a fifth major by joining the pantheon of greats to have won an Open Championship at St Andrews? The main threat to McIlroy’s bid to join Jack, Seve, Sir Nick and Tiger is playing partner Viktor Hovland. The two traded magnificent 66s when in tandem yesterday, those six under rounds pulling them four clear of the stuttering halfway leader Cameron Smith and American rookie Cameron Young. World no 1 Scottie Scheffler lurks five back alongside Si Woo Kim but if McIlroy and Hovland start making birdies, the chasing pack may be too far adrift to catch them. A hugely significant day in the Open’s 150-year history awaits. Thanks for joining us for today’s final round: always one of the great days in sport.

Key occasions:

Golfball wizard Tommy Fleetwood is heading in the proper path. A birdie on the seventh, his second of the day, will get him to 12 below for the week and tied fifth.

A 340-yard blow from the tee leaves Rory McIlroy with 256-yards to the par-five fifth inexperienced. Forward of him each Cameron Younger and Cameron Smith have made birdie to get inside two of his lead. Viktor Hovland needed to lay up. McIlroy is in fluffy tough, launches the ball excessive, finds the center of the inexperienced … and he’s inside 30 toes. An eagle putt to return.

Jordan Spieth’s progress is halted by a bogey on the eighth. He falls out of the highest 5 and passing him in the wrong way is Adam Scott, now three below for the day, 12 below for the week, and sharing fifth with Dustin Johnson.

Rory McIlroy leads the a hundred and fiftieth Open on his personal after Viktor Hovland makes a bogey on the fourth. Keep in mind the Northern Irishman’s phrases final evening, when he mentioned that is an excellent course for staying affected person on via the primary 4 holes, as a result of you recognize the possibilities will come. That begins with the subsequent gap – the par-five. Time to make the most.

Jordan Spieth is making a late bid for glory. He’s 4 below via seven with the three quick par-fours to return very quickly. He’s 12 below for the week and tied fifth with Dustin Johnson.

15.31pm BST leaderboard

There may be an 11-man peloton on 11-under. Forward of them, it appears like this:
-16: McIlroy (3), Hovland (3)
-13: Smith (4), Younger (4)
-12: Johnson (5)

McIlroy can’t convert his birdie alternative on the third. He had solely six toes however the ball wouldn’t drop. Viktor Hovland’s effort slipped by earlier than that and he displayed a bit of frustration. A second par breaker of the day for Dustin Johnson on the fifth sees him be part of Cameron Younger in fourth.

Cameron Younger has eased freed from the peloton at 11-under. A primary birdie of the day has him in alone in fourth. The leaders will each have good appears at birdie on third in the subsequent couple of minutes.

It’s been a terrific month for Filippo Celli. The Italian novice has signed for a 71 and a 5 below complete which earns him the Silver Medal for ending the week as low novice in the sphere. He’s the primary Italian winner since Matteo Manassero in 2009 (who his coach Alberto Binaghi additionally labored with). Celli has mentioned he hopes to play the Ryder Cup in Rome subsequent 12 months. He may must get on his bike (or Vespa) to attain that feat.

What’s the importance of Viktor Hovland hitting golf heights for Norway? After I chatted to Norwegian followers yesterday they mentioned he is a component of a golden technology of their nation’s stars, excelling in sports activities the nation has little expertise of doing nicely in. The likes of Erling Haaland (soccer), Casper Ruud (tennis) and Karsten Warholm (monitor and discipline).

Right here’s how Cameron Smith bought to 13 below for the championship. Behind him, a minimum of eight males are at the moment tied for fourth on 11 below.

Tyrrell Hatton is on a tear. The Englishman has muttered his means via the majors this 12 months, chuntering about Augusta Nationwide within the Masters, the greens at Southern Hills and gradual tempo earlier this week. He’s 4 below via the seventh immediately which has him tied fourth on the leaderboard (11 below). Jordan Spieth joins him with a 3rd birdie of the day and Smith takes his alternative to interrupt par on the second to get inside three of the leaders.

McIlroy lands his method safely on the inexperienced at the first. The putt briefly frightened the opening however leaves the Northern Irishman with a simple tap-in par. Hovland is rather a lot nearer, about 18 toes, however he whacks it via the break. One other par. Up forward, Cameron Smith has a probability for birdie on the 2nd arising.

I reported a short time in the past that Cam Younger spent most of his follow time on the inexperienced. However his first motion with the putter? A 3-stab for his fifth bogey of the week.

Right here we go. Rory McIlroy known as ahead to the first tee and a burst of applause erupts from the bleachers. An easy clip down the famously vast fairway and it avoids a divot. Viktor Hovland provides his ball a bunt and it very practically hits Rory’s because it scuttles down the parched grass. Recreation on. They’re away.

Persistence might be key over the primary few holes for Rory McIlroy. Right here’s what he needed to say final evening in regards to the nature of the course.

It’s simple to be affected person round right here, particularly these first few holes as a result of you recognize you’ve bought possibilities arising. You’ve bought the par-five. We’ve got three drivable par-fours.

I believe with how managed I’m and the way a lot perception I actually have in myself on the minute, it’s possibly a contact simpler to remain affected person.

The 2 Camerons, Smith and Younger, are away. No trouble from the primary tee. Can both of them emulate the 65s which Abraham Ancer and Sadom Kaewkanjana have carded to – briefly – vault them into the highest 5? A repeat for the pair at the moment tied third would apply stress on the joint leaders.

Thanks Dave. I’ll kick off with an indication that tickled golf correspondent Ewan Murray earlier immediately. “Don’t throw the confetti but!” he chuckled. “Typical Scots.”

An eagle on 14 from Italian novice Filippo Celli. That should absolutely be the Silver Medal sewn up. At 5 below, Celli is now six photographs away from his nearest novice rival, Aaron Jarvis, who completed at +1.

As Tommy Fleetwood birdies the first to go to 10 below, I’ll hand over to Matt.

Some Viktor Hovland-based musings on electronic mail from Jeremy Boyce:

They’re an attention-grabbing folks, the Norwish. Inscrutable, largely imperturbable, likely characterised by their geography and local weather. Norway is so long as Chile, 4000km, and like its South American reverse, extends from deep warmth to the frozen wastes. You’ve bought to be prepared for something, and of their calm, inscrutable means, they usually are. Can Rory inject some Celtic fireplace and power to shake him up? I believe they’ll wish to each attempt to play their very own recreation and see what occurs. Both means, one or different of them can be Henrik Ibsen/Hedda Gabbler-ing tonight. As he/she famously mentioned, on discovering that it was all only a sequence of disappointments and disillusion: “Ah nicely, that’s life.” Or possibly Joyce will rule the day, whoever will get their mits on the jug. “Assume you’re escaping and run into your self. Longest means spherical is the shortest means dwelling.

As everyone knows, the shortest distance between any two factors is a straight line, however that’s not all the time the way in which on the dwelling of golf….

Nonetheless hoping for an albatross this week given all of the driveable par 4s and two reachable par 5s. Harold Varner III has simply gone awfully shut. Made his eagle at the least.

We cross dwell to the placing inexperienced. Matt is there watching.

Younger is with Hovland on the placing inexperienced. Solely different man there? Padraig Harrington [missed the cut on Friday] grinding away. Hovland is doing a routine of holing eight foot putts from 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock. Seems very relaxed. A lot slighter in particular person than he appears on TV.

14.15pm BST leaderboard

With the leaderboard now beginning to be impacted, it’s time for a scores on the doorways.

-16: McIlroy (-), Hovland (-)
-12: Younger (-), Smith (12)
-11: Kaewkanjana (16), SW Kim (-), Scheffler (-)
-10: Ancer (16), D Johnson (-)

Tyrell Hatton is having fun with himself much better than yesterday when he shot a 73 alongside slowcoach Talor Gooch. Hatton, twice a winner of the Alfred Dunhill Hyperlinks Championship at St Andrews, has made back-to-back birdies at 2 and three after glorious approaches and that’s taken him to 9 below and tied tenth.

Mexican Abraham Ancer is now six below for the day after 16 and tied eighth on the board whereas Thailand’s Sadom Kaewkanjana has additionally birdied 16 to succeed in the giddy heights of tied fifth.

Rory McIlroy isn’t any stranger to being a 54-hole chief/joint-leader. On the final 20 events the Northern Irishman has topped the third-round leaderboard in PGA Tour/DP World Tour occasions, he’s gone on to win 12 occasions. Even higher information is that he’s transformed from such a place in every of his 4 main wins. His 54-hole lead was generally vital although:

2011 US Open – 8-shot lead
2012 PGA – 3-shot lead
2014 Open – 2-shot lead
2014 PGA – 1-shot lead

That is his first third-round lead in a serious since that 2014 PGA win so hopefully he can faucet into these recollections.

However Viktor Hovland is a robust nearer too. He’s had two 54-hole leads on the PGA Tour and one on the DP World Tour, and has transformed the lot. On the other hand, this can be a main at St Andrews. These pretty low-key occasions have been the Puerto Rico Open, the BMW Worldwide Open in Germany and the World Large Expertise Championship in Mexico.

Some quotes from Sam Burns after he matched the low spherical of the week – an eight below 64 – earlier immediately.

In all probability probably the most benign circumstances we’ve had all week. A bit softer with the rain and never as a lot wind. It’s positively extra gettable. Simply hit the proper photographs, was capable of get them in there fairly shut and make the putts.

It’s all the time good to complete that means. Simply unlucky to shoot 64 within the ultimate spherical and nonetheless end fortieth. So it’s what it’s.

An attention-grabbing little vary replace from Matt…

Having mentioned that the leaders have been giving themselves more room, Rory McIlroy emerges to cheers, and takes a spot tight beside Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Cantlay and Dustin Johnson. Furthermore, they’re all, other than Cantlay, joking round. Mainly McIlroy’s arrival has modified the vibe. Perhaps coincidental however attention-grabbing.

Matt C is down on the vary the place Rory and co are placing in a little bit of late prep.

It’s a quieter vary than yesterday. No stragglers who missed the reduce or early starters fixing issues. The leaders have it to themselves and are giving themselves a bit more room. Much less chatter, much less interplay. An exception? A phrase and a smile for Cam Smith from Adam Scott.

“Hatton regarded on on the gradual play of his companion, Talor Gooch, with murderous intent,” wrote Ewan Murray in his third-round report yesterday. That’s Tyrrell quite than Derek by the way in which. The Englishman has been paired with final week’s Barbasol Championship winner, Trey Mullinax, immediately. Hatton left his birdie putt quick at the first however has arrange a great opportunity for a par breaker at 2 after taking lifeless intention. Hopefully Mullinax will get on with it a bit greater than Gooch did.

Up at 14, one among the 2 par fives at St Andrews, Thailand’s Sadom Kaewkanjana drains a 15-footer for birdie and advances to 10 below. This is a few efficiency from the teen. He’s now tied seventh alongside Dustin Johnson.

We noticed it with our personal eyes: Cameron Smith went from placing like a god to performing like a mere mortal on the greens yesterday. The stats from datagolf again it up. The Aussie ranked 1st for Strokes Gained: Placing over the primary two days however was solely 66th in that class [losing 1.65 strokes to the field] in spherical three. Tommy Fleetwood was statistically the very best putter on Saturday, with Viktor Hovland fifth and Rory McIlroy thirty third.

Matt stories that Smith has simply arrived. “Rucksack, hoodie, cheeky grin. Full competitors winner/mascot vibe.”

Tony Finau is one thing of a golf thoroughbred – 10 prime 10s within the majors – however his cost has come too late this week. The simple-swinging American is six below for the day after 16 holes and has surged into tied twelfth. He did not break 70 in every of his first three rounds. As I write this, he’s enjoying out of the Highway Bunker at 17. Oh pricey, I’ve cursed him.

One participant on the market now has snuck into the highest 10 and it’s an unlikely identify: Thailand’s Sadom Kaewkanjana, who booked his Open ticket by successful the SMBC Singapore Open. The 23-year-old is 5 below for the day (eagle at 5) and 9 below total, adequate for tied eighth.

A reminder of when the ultimate half-dozen teams exit. Not lengthy now!

2.00pm Jordan Spieth, Patrick Cantlay
2.10pm Matt Fitzpatrick, Adam Scott
2.20pm Dustin Johnson, Tommy Fleetwood
2.30pm Si Woo Kim, Scottie Scheffler
2.40pm Cameron Younger, Cameron Smith
2.50pm Rory McIlroy, Viktor Hovland

Matt C is absorbing the motion backstage.

Rory McIlroy’ s mum and pop simply wandered into the property. An off-the-cuff stroll alongside the primary. Previous all of the meals shops and the Open Arms, via the packed crowds. Don’t suppose anybody recognised them!

Calm earlier than the storm for the leaders. Jordan Spieth practising his twitching, DJ considering he’s at a Intercourse Pistols gig, Adam Scott honing his shirt recreation (and his quick recreation), Shane Lowry and Tommy Fleetwood the gang favourites, Rory the phrase in everybody’s lips.

Glorious birdie-birdie-birdie begin by Xander Schauffle immediately. Final week’s Scottish Open winner hasn’t had the week he needed however appears to be ending off in type. A distinction to Jon Rahm who seems able to explode after a bogey at 3 and a double bogey at 4 when he had wedge in hand for his second. The Spaniard drops to tied 68th.

Native Scot Robert MacIntyre is at the moment giving the galleries lots to cheer. The left-hander has bagged two eagles immediately – on the fifth and seventh – and is -6 total and tied twenty sixth as he tees off at 13. A disgrace about that pesky double bogey at the first immediately.

Barclay Brown went with the Stone Roses Spike Island bucket hat immediately quite than the wider-rimmed It Ain’t Half Sizzling Mum variety of the primary three days. However regardless of a birdie at 18, his bid to win the Silver Medal for main novice went south after a run of bogey, bogey, bogey, bogey, double bogey from 13 to 17. That closing 75 left him at +2, one further swing than Aussie Aaron Jarvis’s +1. It means Italian Filippo Celli is in pole place within the novice race: he’s 3 after 7 holes so has a four-shot cushion.

Matt caught up with weblog favorite BB as he walked off 18. Barclay’s identify? He has no thought why he’s known as Barclay besides that his father is Scottish. Regardless of our nonsense that his identify urged he starred alongside Terry-Thomas, Brown has no appearing background and shortly gave up drama at college. However he’s having fun with his economics diploma at Stanford [Tiger’s old uni) and will see out his four years there. No Silver Medal but he had a chuckle that he’d become a cult figure this week.

Like many at St Andrews, DP World Tour pro Matthew Southgate went berserk when commentating on Rory holing his bunker shot at the 10th for eagle yesterday. “It sounded like the stand was coming down. It was like Wembley,” Southgate said this morning.

Matt Cooper is live at St Andrews and has been regaling us with a few tales from the Auld Grey Toon.

A disappointing Open for Celeb-spotting – perhaps even they can’t get in via the ballot. Actress Kathryn Newton has been here, there and everywhere as an R&A Ambassador (I can even happily report she was nice enough to record a wonderful message for my board-treading niece). Elsewhere, Niall Horan was seen in the R&A World Golf Museum, while Tim Henman, Andrew Murray and Gavin Hastings have been tasting whisky in the tented village. There’s a rumour that Robbie Williams showed up in town. I’ve seen Kirsty Wark from Panorama, but I’m not entirely sure if she counts as a celebrity. All in all, nothing on the scale of the past, when heavyweight whispers of George Clooney, Tom Cruise and even P-Diddy were common.

And another one…

Fancy a front row seat for today? The Rusacks Hotel, which overlooks the 1st and 18th holes, has been renovated recently, with the NFL-playing Manning brothers part of the group that undertook the project. A seat on the roof this afternoon is said to be costing £3,000 per person.

Can anyone beat the Smith/Burns low round of 64? Danny Willett, the 2016 Masters champion and winner of the 2021 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews, thinks so. “Greens a touch softer, not much wind. There’s a low score out there. A good chance for the leading two to stretch away from the pack,” said Willett after closing with a 3-under 69 to finish at -4.

At this stage yesterday, Kevin Kisner was threatening to shoot something ridiculous. He eventually signed for a 65. Nobody has burst out the traps like Kisner today – he was -7 after 10 – but Sam Burns, the world No 11, enjoyed a red-hot finish to shoot 64 and match Cameron Smith’s low round of the week. Burns closed with four straight birdies, a cautionary tale for anyone thinking this is over if someone has a big lead walking to the 15th tee. That eight under round has lifted Burns 56 spots to tied 21st.

Ahhh, lovely. Hang on a sec, just got something in my eye. ‘Music Box Dancer’ as many of you will know was the theme music to ‘Around With Alliss’. Talking of the great man, here’s Peter’s commentary on one of golf’s iconic moments. The little chuckle after the ball topples in is perfect. Pure Peter. Imagine if Rory has a four-shot lead putting on the final hole and pays homage to the Seve celebration. I’m getting ahead of myself!

We did the BBC’s Open golf theme music on day one so let Frank Mills play us in for immediately’s closing spherical with one other basic. Take it away massive fella…

Preamble

Is that this the day? Is that this the day when Rory McIlroy ends his eight-year watch for a fifth main by becoming a member of the pantheon of greats to have gained an Open Championship at St Andrews? The essential risk to McIlroy’s bid to be part of Jack, Seve, Sir Nick and Tiger is enjoying companion Viktor Hovland. The 2 traded magnificent 66s when in tandem yesterday, these six below rounds pulling them 4 away from the stuttering midway chief Cameron Smith and American rookie Cameron Younger. World no 1 Scottie Scheffler lurks 5 again alongside Si Woo Kim but when McIlroy and Hovland begin making birdies, the chasing pack could also be too far adrift to catch them. A massively vital day within the Open’s 150-year historical past awaits. Thanks for becoming a member of us for immediately’s ultimate spherical: all the time one among the good days in sport.
